As the calendar flips to November, local food pantries in Grand Ledge are facing an overwhelming surge in need. With SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits temporarily halted as of November 1st, families across Eaton County and beyond are turning to food banks for their next meal — and the shelves are starting to run bare. 🧃🍞

“We’ve never seen it this tight,” said one local pantry volunteer. “We’re doing everything we can, but without donations, we won’t be able to meet the need.”

The Grand Ledge Area Food Bank, along with other nearby partners like St. Michael’s Food Pantry and The Grand Ledge Seventh-day Adventist Church pantry, are stepping up to serve as many families as possible. However, donations are urgently needed.

How You Can Help 🛒

The food banks are requesting immediate donations of non-perishable items such as:

  • Canned vegetables and fruit

  • Pasta and sauce

  • Peanut butter and jelly

  • Boxed meals

  • Soup, stew, and chili

  • Diapers and hygiene products

Donations can be dropped off at most churches and community centers during business hours. If you’re unsure where to go, call 2-1-1, the United Way resource line, to get connected to the nearest food bank or drop-off location.

Monetary donations are also welcome and go a long way, helping pantries buy in bulk and fill gaps in inventory. Many food banks accept online contributions — visit their websites or Facebook pages for donation links.

The Bigger Picture 🌍

Over 1.3 million Michiganders rely on SNAP benefits. With those benefits paused, many families are skipping meals or choosing between food and rent. Local schools are preparing to see more students coming in hungry. Churches and food pantries are doing their best, but the need far outweighs the current supply.

“This is not just about charity. It’s about dignity,” said a staff member at a local church food program. “When we feed our neighbors, we feed our whole community.”

Let’s Show Up, Grand Ledge ❤️

If you’ve ever wondered how you could make a real difference, this is the moment. Whether you donate one can or one hundred, you’re helping a child eat dinner or a senior stay nourished through the weekend.

📍 Drop off donations at your nearest pantry, spread the word, or host a small food drive with friends or coworkers.

Every can counts. Every dollar matters. Every neighbor deserves a full plate.
