The Grand Ledge High School Comets announced a major move in their athletics program this week — long-time assistant coach Jason Smith will take the helm as the new head baseball coach, stepping into the role full-time starting this season.
Smith, who served as interim head coach during the Comets’ strong run in the recent Diamond Classic tournament, says taking this position is “an honor and a privilege,” especially given his deep roots in Grand Ledge.
Athletic Director Steve Baker welcomed Smith with open arms, praising his character, commitment to student athletes, and longstanding involvement in the community.
🏠 Local Heart, Local Commitment
Jason Smith isn’t just the new coach—he’s one of us. His family has lived in Grand Ledge for more than two decades, and he’s been active in youth baseball and the Comets’ bullpen club for years.
“This is a historic program,” Smith said. “My staff and I are excited to get to work with our student-athletes, the administration, alumni, and this community to build another championship-caliber team.”
He said he wants to build on the strong foundation left by past coaches — on and off the field — and make sure every player grows as both an athlete and a person. Athletic Director Baker echoed that sentiment, saying Smith’s “leadership and involvement in this community’s baseball programs… directly benefited the high school program that he now coaches.”
⚾ What’s Next for the Comets
Under Smith’s leadership, the Comets look to build on momentum and set new goals. The program is expected to focus on:
Strengthening fundamentals and team discipline
Deepening connections with alumni and local baseball organizations
Creating more visibility for players beyond high school
Fans should expect a blend of gameplay, development, and community involvement. Smith’s experience as an assistant coach during the recent Diamond Classic, paired with his local background, gives him a unique edge.
💬 What the Community Is Saying
Several local supporters have already voiced excitement over the hire. One former player shared online, “Coach Smith always pushed us to be better on and off the field — glad to see him leading the Comets now.” Others highlighted his fairness, his ability to build trust with players, and his emphasis on community pride.
