GRAND LEDGE, MI — The Grand Ledge community mourns the passing of David Kenneth Chappel, who died peacefully at his home on November 9, 2025, at the age of 74. Known for his warm smile, tireless service, and deep love for his family, David leaves behind a lasting legacy that stretches from his career in science to his quiet acts of local compassion.

A Life of Love & Family

Born on January 29, 1951, in Detroit, David was the son of Harold Kenneth and Adelaide (Glod) Chappel. He spent over 50 years in a devoted marriage to his beloved wife Carribea Chappel — a partnership that blossomed into a family defined by laughter, resilience, and deep care.

Together, they raised two children: Shanda (Todd) Baum and Jacob (Melody) Chappel. David was especially proud to be “Papa” to grandchildren Taylor (Scott) Vasquez, Tessa Baum, David Chappel, and Hunter Chapel — and even more so when he became a great-grandfather to Ahnalicia, Sophia, and Sephora Vasquez, and Roman Baum. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦💞

A Dedicated Career & Generous Heart

David served as a lab technician for the State of Michigan for over 40 years, earning admiration for his precise work and dependable spirit. He was lovingly known as the department’s “grill master,” cooking up cheer at every holiday party. 🔬🔥

After retiring, he spent several years mentoring students at Ferris State University, preparing the next generation of lab techs with humor and heart. His retirement also became a new chapter of service: volunteering for Believers Food Pantry, where he personally drove donation trucks and organized community outreach efforts.

💡 To honor David’s legacy, donations in his name can be made to Believers Food Pantry, 15200 Wright Road, Grand Ledge, MI 48837.

Craftsmanship, Music & Porch Talks

David was an avid woodworker, a self-taught craftsman whose pieces were favorites at local craft shows. Many Grand Ledge homes likely feature his creations — all handcrafted with care and patience. 🪵🎁

A lifelong lover of classic rock and blues, David cherished evenings on his back porch, a beer in hand, music playing, and laughter shared with his son — even when Carribea had to remind him the neighbors were trying to sleep! 🎸🍻
