Grand Ledge MI – Picture this: 6" to 10" of snow in the forecast, temperatures dropping faster than your motivation to leave the house, and yet...

Downtown Grand Ledge was absolutely buzzing with holiday shoppers this past weekend.

Talk about dedication!

I bundled up and made the trek down Bridge Street to check in with our local shop owners, and wow – this turned out to be.

Friday: The Calm Before the Shopping Storm

Black Friday downtown?

More like "Where Is Everybody?" Friday.

Most store owners I chatted with said things were pretty quiet, and they weren't surprised.

"Everyone's hitting the big box stores for those doorbuster TV deals," one owner told me with a knowing shrug.

Fair enough – we've all been there.

Saturday: Hold My Hot Cocoa

But then Small Business Saturday rolled around, and it was like someone flipped a switch!

The same shops that were practically echoing on Friday were suddenly packed with people.

The difference was night and day – or should I say, Friday and Saturday?

The Collective and About The Home were absolutely bursting at the seams.

I could barely squeeze through the door!

I had to know: what's the secret sauce?

The owner of The Collective let me in on her strategy – she's posting three times a day on Facebook and constantly creating events to keep her shop (and the amazing crafters and vendors she works with) top of mind.

Clearly, it's working!

Not Everyone Hit the Jackpot

Of course, the weekend wasn't a smashing success for everyone.

The Rebel Mimi's cashier gave me a solid "meh" when I asked how things were going – not great, not terrible, just... middle of the road.

Though I did notice a few shoppers browsing when I stopped by, so that's something!

The Ledge Craft Lane had a tougher go of it, unfortunately.

They saw foot traffic, but people were mostly window shopping rather than pulling out their wallets.

Ouch.

Why This Weekend Matters

Here's the thing: Black Friday and Small Business Saturday aren't just catchy names – they're literally make-or-break days for many small businesses.

This is when shops hope to go from "in the red" (losing money) to "in the black" (finally profitable).

Hence "Black Friday" – it's all about those bottom lines!

Fun fact: American Express actually created Small Business Saturday back in 2010 to drive people to local mom-and-pop shops (and yes, to get them swiping those AMEX cards).

But it's evolved into so much more – it's become a genuine movement to support the heart and soul of our community.

The Shopping Season's Just Getting Started

Even though Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are in the rearview mirror, the holiday shopping season is far from over!

Our downtown shops and stores across the city are still open and ready to help you check off that gift list.

So grab your coat, brave the cold, and show some love to your local businesses.

They're counting on us!
